It's been about two weeks of no real loss (also no gain). Blech. I know exactly what happened. Right as I was getting out of the first phase of South Beach, I got a stomach virus. The kind that completely cleaned me out and I didn't eat for two days. I lost about three pounds, and when my stomach returned to it's normal state, I gave myself free reign to eat whatever I wanted. And then kept on eating whatever I wanted, especially since I was officially done with the first two weeks of South Beach and could add back in some carbs here and there. And that's what got me last time ... I'm just not good at eating a little bit of carbs.
I've already got food planned for this week, and it's all mostly on the South Beach plan, so I'm going to stick with it and do what I can this week. Then, next week, I'm going to give Atkins a spin. I've never even considered Atkins before because it struck me as so completely unhealthy, but as I've learned more about the benefits of a high fat, high protein diet over a high carb diet, I've started to see things in a different light. I don't know if I'll start on their strict Induction phase or the more flexible Ongoing Weight Loss phase, but either way, I'm going to try to just stay away from carbs for reals. Or, at least, grains. There are carbs in veggies and cheese and all sorts of things that don't affect me the same way bread and tortillas and bagels all affect me.
So, another week of South Beach, then a slight switch (and it's really pretty slight) to Atkins to see how I do with that diet. It will probably be a bit harder to stick with ... and my birthday's coming up ... but I'd love to be down another four or five pounds by then.
Oh, by the way, when I weighed this morning, I was at 186, so that's down 14.5 pounds from my starting point. Another five pounds would bring me within spitting distance of a 20-lb. loss, which would be a great birthday present milestone!

StartYourDiet.com
So I wanted to write about StartYourDiet.com in case I ever forget about it. I had an account a while ago, but they must delete free accounts after a certain length of inactivity. But I started a new account today and added in all of the weights that I've recorded here, so I have April - present. So, in about 8 weeks, I've lost 14 pounds! Not too shabby!
If I keep losing weight at a rate of 2 lbs. per week, I'll be at my goal of 160 by September 18! Doesn't that sound SO CLOSE? Even if I only lose 1 lb. per week, I'll be at my goal just before Christmas! And if I'm losing 2 lbs. a week, I could get to 150 by Oct. 23! And at 2 lbs. per week, I'll be at the lowest I've ever been (that I can remember) -- 177 -- before the end of July (July 21)! Now that's exciting.
Boring number crunching, maybe, but awesome to see how much progress I've made. Even with the few stumbles I've had (going to Chicago, eating crap after Josh's parents were here), I've been losing at an average rate of 1.7 lbs. per week since April.
I'm heading home for lunch today to see Josh and Oliver (who's home sick), so I think I'll grab some of last night's leftover stuffed zucchini. Then for dinner, I think I'll make Taco Bake. I've already got the chicken cooked, so it shouldn't take too long. And I do love Taco Bake when I use chicken.

13 lbs. lost!
Wow! So, I had a pretty big jump down in the past day, and I attribute that to the "that time of the month" trend. I felt like I should have lost more in the past couple of days, but the scale was barely budging. So it makes sense that now I've lost a good bit all at once.
So, down to 187.5 this morning. I'm excited ... I'm only about 10 pounds away from the lowest I can remember being and only 27.5 pounds away from my goal.
This weekend is going to be interesting. We're going out of town to Josh's cousin's graduation tonight, and I'm not in charge of the food. There will be cookouts and things like that mainly, so I can just eat burgers with no buns and try to steer clear of basically everything else :) I'm sure it'll be a fun time, though!

180s!! — 11.5 pounds lost!
OK, I kind of knew this SHOULD happen this morning, but HOW AWESOME was it to wake up and weigh myself and see 189?!
Actually, the first time I weighed, it said 188.5, and I cursed the scale for being so wrong, and then I realized that hey, that's not too far away! I've been super-good today; I actually ate leftovers for breakfast, and I found I really enjoyed it PLUS I'm not hungry yet and it's 12:30.
Yesterday, I drank one of those little powdered mix-in things from Crystal Light, and I thought it just had artificial sweeteners in it, but apparently it had some sugar too. Ooops! I ended up being SO HUNGRY all day yesterday, and I'm thinking those two things might be related. If so, a teensy bit of sugar made a huge difference in how I felt. I will definitely remember that!

Yep, back to the beach
So I mentioned in my last post that I was considering starting South Beach again, and I officially did ... four days later. Those four days were sort of a mish-mash of eating whatever was sitting around the house because I used up our grocery budget for the weekend Josh's parents were here. And so this morning I'm still sitting at that 10.5 pounds lost mark, but I'm looking forward to waking up tomorrow and breaking into the 180s ... for the first time in, oh, six years, I think.
South Beach is going pretty well so far. I'm really trying to stick with it, eat all of my veggies and not overdo the nuts thing. I haven't switched to exclusively low-fat cheese because I'm starting to think that a little bit of full fat doesn't hurt. That's something I'll change if my weight loss slows. And one of my coworkers is going on the diet with me, so I'm super excited to have the support and the peer-pressure ... although I think I'm probably the strong one in this situation :)
So, I officially started Sunday morning back up at 193 and and as of this morning I'm at 190. Most of that loss is just getting rid of the junk I ate all week and getting me ready to actually start losing!
One side note, I was using the BMI for 5'6" and Josh measured me last night and I'm actually 5'8" ... wow! That makes a 10-pound difference in my goal weight! So now instead of going for 150, I think I'm going for 160. That means I'm 30 pounds away from my goal! I still wouldn't mind getting to 150, but I'll have to play it by ear. My first goal is definitely 160 now :)

Back on Track
OK, so I don't have a horrible disaster to report, although my three days in Chicago weren't pretty. Especially since I came back and didn't feel like cooking or going to the grocery store, so I extended my lapse for a few extra days by eating whatever Josh had bought or eating at restaurants. But, I'm happy to report that I'm currently at the 10.5 pounds lost mark, meaning I lost a total of 1.5 lbs. since the last time I wrote. (Although that doesn't include the couple of pounds I gained AND lost after Chicago.)
I'm considering the South Beach Diet again. I felt the best and ate the healthiest when I was on that diet, and isn't that the point of this whole thing? It is really the way I want to eat most of the time, and it's not that tough, once you get past the first two weeks. It really goes a long way toward crushing any cravings for sweets, though, which is a big step.
The drawbacks are that it doesn't allow for a lot of flexibility the way the Weight Watchers program does. But, the more flexibility I have, the more I eat crappy food, so I really just need to commit myself to eating in a healthy way. I may use the Weight Watchers points system to check what I'm eating and give me some quantifiable feedback, but I think I'm still going to go back to the South Beach Diet.
Last night, I researched and printed out a bunch of information about South Beach, three-hole-punched it and made my own little binder with all of the basics. I think I will start next week ... mainly because I spent our entire food budget for this week to buy food for when Josh's parents were here. Now we're going to try to make do with leftovers and whatever I can find in the fridge. Then I'll start eating properly on Saturday. I'll try to do what I can during this week, mainly just by not going overboard because we don't have that much food. :)
